Labour open to making blacklisting a criminal offence

Speaking today (September 8th) at TUC Congress Chuka Umunna, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary said that he was “open” to making blacklisting a criminal offence.

In reply to a question from construction union UCATT on whether the next Labour Government would make blacklisting a criminal offence, Mr Umunna said: “I am open to whether criminal liability applies to this. I don’t want to prejudge the inquiry I have promised.

Mr Umunna also reconfirmed that if elected next year a Labour Government will hold a full inquiry into blacklisting and those hearings will be held “in public”.

Steve Murphy, General Secretary of UCATT, said: “With every day that passes the construction companies that blacklisted workers and ruined their lives are seeing the net tighten around them. There will be no hiding place for blacklisters.”
