Construction Deaths Remain Far Too High In London And The South East

Research undertaken by construction union UCATT has revealed that deaths in London and the South East remain worryingly high.

In 2007/8 18 construction workers were killed in UCATT’s London and South East Region compared to 20 deaths in 2006/7. Nationally during the same period construction deaths decreased slightly from 79 in 2006/7 to 72 in 2007/8.

UCATT Members Share £30,000

UCATT have won a group of member’s working on Terminal 5 a share of £30,000 after they had been threatened with redundancy. The members’ company had refused to consult with UCATT over the redundancy despite being a recognised union on the site.

Garvey Bros Pay Price

UCATT have managed win compensation for a member after being made redundant by Garvey Bros. After being told of his redundancy, the member turned to UCATT for assistance and on the London region’s advice wrote to the company to seek holiday pay, redundancy pay and claiming unfair dismissal. Like so many construction firms, Garvey Bros believed they could ignore one of their workers.

New Fears on Crane Safety After Lewisham Accident

Construction union UCATT are calling for an urgent inquiry following the latest accident involving a crane on a construction site.

The accident occurred today (Tuesday 11 December) in Bird in Hand Passage, Forest Hill London SE23 at around 10 o’clock this morning. The jib of the crane which was in operation at the time collapsed, knocking over several concrete pillars.

Vigil In Oxfordshire In Memory Of Construction Worker Killed At Work

Construction union UCATT are to hold a vigil following the recent death of a construction worker.

Construction work Altin Balla lost his fight for life last week following a major accident on August 29 while working on the Marriotts Close, Shopping Centre Development in Witney, Oxfordshire.

Construction union UCATT are calling on Islington council to defend the jobs of highly skilled craft workers in the borough.

Kier Islington is planning to close the borough’s joinery shop and transfer work to a separate entity in Harlow.

Union Campaign Saves Saves Skilled Work In Islington

A 10-month campaign by construction union UCATT to prevent the loss of highly skilled jobs from Islington has been a success.

The campaign began last year when Kier Islington, which provides repairs and maintenance on local authority housing in the borough, announced that it intended to close the highly successful joinery shop and transfer the work to Harlow, Essex.
