UCATT’s London Events on Workers Memorial Day

Construction union UCATT are organising two events in London to mark this year’s International Workers Memorial Day on Wednesday 28th April.

Construction Deaths in London Remain Far Too High

Research by construction union UCATT has revealed that 11 construction workers were fatally injured in London in 2008/9.

The total of 11 deaths is the same number as were killed in the capital in 2007/8. The number of deaths in London is the highest in the country.

Detailed analysis by construction union UCATT has revealed that six construction workers were killed in South East England in 2009/10. The six fatalities was the same number of deaths in the region as the previous year 2008/9.

London Event To Mark International Workers Memorial Day

Construction union UCATT are organising a major event to mark International Workers Memorial Day on Tuesday 28 April.

Construction workers will gather at the Building Worker Statute for a short memorial meeting, which will include the laying of wreaths and the releasing of 72 black balloons (one for every construction worker killed in Britain last year).

UCATT Highlights Inspections During European Health and Safety Week

Activists from construction union UCATT will be taking part in activities throughout Britain as part of European Health and Safety Week, which runs from 25th-29th October.

Holiday Pay

UCATT continues to campaign on the issue of holiday pay with some success. We have noticed since last Conference that more Contractors are issuing ‘Contracts of Engagement’ that do not require the individual to carry out the work personally and allow him/her to send in a substitute in their place. In 2005 we launched a campaign against this practice.

Government’s Right to Buy Scheme Even Worse Than First Feared

The Government’s plans to reinvigorate the Right to Buy policy are even worse than first feared. The Government published its response to its consultation exercise on Right to Buy on Monday 12thMarch. Under the original proposals the Government were proposing that the maximum discount on buying your council house or flat would be £50,000. That figure has been increased to £75,000.

Steve Murphy Elected UCATT General Secretary

Steve Murphy has been elected General Secretary of construction union UCATT. He is currently the union’s Yorkshire Regional Secretary.

Mr Murphy received 5,475 votes compared to 3,529 for Jerry Swain the Regional Secretary for UCATT’s London and South East Region.
